HARTMAN HAPPENINGS

Spring 2007 • A Newsletter from Hartman Cattle Co., Tecumseh, NE

Bull Sale Scheduled June 30, 2007

The extreme top 25 herdsire prospects out of the entire 2007 Hartman & Associates calf crop will be offered for sale at Private Treaty on Saturday, June 30, 2007.
This tremendous selection of bull calves will include the individuals we have tabbed as the best out of both our ET and natural groups. They will be displayed in their respective pastures along side their dams.
There are new and exciting matings along
with profit-proven crosses that have moved this program to the fore in the industry. All bulls will be guaranteed PHA free. Including sons of The Man, Sooner, Hotline, Statesman, Power Plus,
Stockbroker, Wells Fargo and Contender.
We are truly excited about the depth of quality and the many exceptional individuals in this year’s crop. We’re anxious to show this offering and look forward to answering any questions about these bulls or recommending particular ones for your program.
Please call ahead if you want to inspect this
offering prior to sale day. But be sure and join us on sale day, Saturday, June 30th. You can see these calves in the pasture in their natural settings; make your selection at your leisure and we’ll have some lunch at the house!

Our Future Demands
Genetic Screening:
We Tested our Whole Herd

With the genetic problems that have surfaced in recent years, we tested all of our herd sires plus our entire cowherd for TH and PHA as soon as the commercial tests became available. We tested over 300 HCC & HAA brood cows and the whole group tested clean.
The majority of our herd sires tested clean, however Wells Fargo and Contender were TH Free but PHA carriers. The calves by these bulls in this years calf crop will be tested and handled accordingly. We’ll no doubt have some disappointments but hopefully with them being out of clean dams we’ll have a good percentage of clean progeny.
As breeders we feel it’s imperative to represent our cattle honestly and eliminate the problems as rapidly as possible. Anyone who denies, ignores or tries to hide the issue is only kidding themselves. At HCC our plan is to  MAKE ‘EM GOOD & KEEP ‘EM CLEAN!

Major Sales Made
On 2007 Heifer
Calves

     Two recent major private
treaty transactions will include the entire Hartman & Associates 2007 heifer calf crop with the exception of two head, that will be offered on June 30, 2007.
Alexander Land & Cattle Co., Pawnee, Illinois, purchased 38 choice heifer calves. This outstanding set of heifers along with HAA Smart Money 316S, the 2007 Denver National Champion bull should enhance their position in the Land of Lincoln Maine-Anjou world. Watch the progress of this young herd!
Fifty fancy heifer calves will go to Dixon Cattle Co., Wynnewood, Oklahoma. And what a set of brood cow prospects they are! We’re really proud of the uniformity  and depth of quality they
exhibit. This is a young herd on the move in an area known for their good Maine- Anjou cattle.
We at Hartman & Associates want to thank and congratulate both of these outfits for their major investment in HCC genetics
and wish them much success in their pursuit of excellence in the Maine-Anjou breed. Thanks and Good Luck!
In essence these two groups represent our total crop of ET and Natural heifer calves for ’07, all black, most polled and majority sired by The Man, Sooner, Hotline, Statesman, Power Plus, Stockbroker, Wells Fargo and Contender. The only two head not included in these bulk sales will be the buyers choice of two head out of the entire crop. They will be a special addition to our June 30, 2007 Private Treaty Sale (see related article for details).

HCC Junior Bonus
Awards Expanded

     The success of our
customers, particularly
the Juniors, is our primary
goal and a great source of satisfaction for us. Anything we can do to encourage participation by Junior Breeders is of utmost importance to us – without them our future is limited.
Beginning with the heifers sold in 2007 we’re raising the ante on the cash awards for State Fair and Expo winners and adding a Supreme Heifer Award as well.
In the 10 years since we initiated our Junior Bonus Program for heifers purchased at HCC we have awarded $53,850.00 in cash and credit to over 50 Junior Exhibitors. These are monies we gladly pay, as it’s an investment that has paid great dividends. As we reflect on some of the early recipients in this program, some have aged out of the Junior Shows and are now making their mark as adult members. This is what it’s all about!      The enthusiasm at Maine- Anjou Junior Shows is contagious. We can be proud that the American Maine-
Anjou
Association has really

good people on staff working with our junior members and together they’re doing lots of good things. If you haven’t attended some of these Junior Shows or followed their progress we urge you to do so – they deserve our support!
The 2007 National Junior Maine - Anjou show will be held June 17-22 in Lawton, Oklahoma. Put it on your calendar, those folks have a great show planned!
In 2008, we can look forward to a really spectacular event. It will be June 29 – July 5 at the American Royal in Kansas City, Missouri. It will be something special. Four major breed associations are working together to hold their Junior National at this venue; cooperating, sharing and benefiting greatly from the economics and added exposure that this joint venture will bring. The American Maine-Anjou, the American Chianina and American Shorthorn Association will be hosting their respective events June 29 thru July 5, 2008 and the American Hereford Association will dovetail in next on July 12 – 19. Mark the dates – it will be great fun!

The Search is On
12th Annual Customer Appreciation Sale will feature
country’s finest

Mike has already begun his relentless search for the
breed’s best heifers to include in the 12th Annual Customer Appreciation Sale, December 9, 2007. The pressure is on to again bring together the top  offering of the season. This event is a nationally known source of prize winning females and enjoys a reputation for having sent living legends out into the Maine-Anjou breed. Making the short list for this sale is a special endorsement of a breeder’s program. The commitment and support of a great group of HCC Customers are what makes this sale the envy of the industry. Watch for details closer to the sale. With the spectacular individuals already committed this promises to indeed be “a December to Remember.”

November 1st, 2007
All of the December sale heifers will be gathered at Hartman Cattle Co. by November 1st and will be ready for inspection beginning on this date. Please call ahead for an appointment!

Hook Close to the Load
Mike sees work ahead in the beef industry.

     We’ve enjoyed a tremendous
run in the beef business the last few years in most all segments of the industry. As we watch the rising cost of feed grains and what’s happening to some other sources of protein, we can’t let our guard down.
The frustrating thing is that often one segment of the beef industry lives off the other. We must be aware that we’re all in this together – Seedstock Producers, Cow-Calf man, Feedlot operator, Packer, Restaurateur, Everybody! If we don’t all continue to improve the quality and consistency of our end product consumer demand declines and we’re all dead in the water.
It’s up to us to provide a product that’s palatable and consistent enough that whatever venue, Golden Corral or Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, it deserves the price and brings them back. We’ve got to support the R & D people to develop and expand products that are fast, easy, tasty, marketable and within the realm of purchase. It’s a long way from conception to consumer and we all must play our part. Sometimes maybe we need to step back and look through our wide-angle to fully appreciate the challenges ahead.
     Dave Steen, commercial
marketing director for the Maine-
Anjou Association, has one of the
loneliest jobs in the world. His is not a glamorous position, he’s down in the trenches daily, pounding the pavement, calling on sale barns, feedlots, order buyers, commercial producers, and anybody who will listen to him expound on the merits of Maine-Anjou Cattle. He’s competing with breeds whose advertising budgets dwarf what he has to work with. But he’s making progress,

he’s a persistent cuss and we need to thank and encourage him – his task is monumental! We’ve got to encourage our board to appropriate the funds necessary to continue the mission.
The least visible but most important part of our business, here at Hartman’s, is the production and marketing of commercial and purebred bulls. We don’t get all heifers here; we get bulls – lots of bulls. We spend a tremendous amount of time and travel to promote and market

our bulls. If we couldn’t sell these bulls we couldn’t exist.
The response we’ve gotten from the large numbers of Maine- Anjou bulls that we’ve placed in big cow outfits in Western America and Western Canada has been most gratifying. If you follow our program you know we’re constantly searching for the next generation of bulls to advance our program. Our customers demand it! Simple cowboy logic requires live calves and gainability and we constantly work at improving carcass and maternal traits so they’ll feed and be docile and milky enough to make cows when it comes to that. Of course it goes without saying they’ve got to be sound to work in the real world.
I feel the Maine-Anjou breed is well positioned in the industry but

we must keep the pressure on. We must strive to expand the market in all areas, encourage registrations and membership, support the youth, budget soundly, promote vigorously, and work toward common goals. We have an excellent staff in place at the AMAA and have been well served by many good men and women on our board, and we all must do our part. With that in mind, I will be a candidate from Region II for a seat on the Board of  Director’s of the American Maine-Anjou Association. I will be happy to discuss the Maine- Anjou business with you at anytime. With the election coming up this fall, the ballots will be mailed in the August/September Maine-Anjou Voice Magazine. I would appreciate your support and ask for your vote. If elected I will serve with an open mind and to the best of my ability.

GVC Statesman 4R
A junior herdsire introduced into our program
to compliment some of the HCC stacked pedigrees. He’s really gonna work! Several of the younger calves in our 2007 crop are by him and as they break from the pack this fall and winter they are going to create quite a stir. He’s a bull for the future!

It’s Been a Great Spring
In Southeast Nebraska

Despite the long, hard winter we’ve had a particularly good spring at Hartmans.

It’s been an unusual season in our country with overly warm weather early followed by a late blast of cold winter temperatures that caused considerable set backs to early blooms. We saw scattered moisture that made for some muddy conditions but changed our drought pattern. Our grass got a far better start than past seasons and in mid-May we had 6 to 8 inches of rain in this area that filled out ponds and structures to overflowing, something we haven’t seen in several years. Three years ago, we made a major improvement to our calving facility with the addition of a large open shed. But with even greater numbers of winter calves due starting early January this year it called for more indoor housing. At Dalton’s suggestion and under his guidance we constructed another insulated building to house several calving pens. He and Butch cycled about 100 pairs through there in January to break it in good and finished up calving recently with an excellent calving season.

As the weather opened up Steve and crew set in and got the cows sheared in good time. Pressing to get our spring work done the boys got the yards and barns cleaned in rapid order. March 25th here means it’s time to start another breeding season. We had a good run on our AI cows and heifers and sorted and turned bulls out with the balance. With the excellent moisture and grass conditions, our cows and calves look great and we’re about ready for our first cutting of hay. Hasn’t been much time for the crew to slip in any fishin’ and huntin’ yet, but I’m sure they’ll get some worked in. They’ve earned it!
